THE EVACUEE -A WW2 Ghost Story

Set in the autumn of 1940, THE EVACUEE is a classic ghost story of a girl who is evacuated out of London and sent to live with a complete stranger.
It is late evening and Janet Young, who has not spoken a word since witnessing the death of her brother during the Blitz, has arrived at widower George Wilson’s home, accompanied by her compassionate billeting officer, Brenda.
Upset, lonely and frightened of her surroundings, Janet explores her new bedroom. Spooked by the eerie contents, Janet rushes to bed and waits for morning…
Over the next few days, we see the stresses of war take its toll on all three of our characters, turning each of their worlds upside down. As unexplained events and strange goings on happen within the house, George’s dark and disturbing past is brought to light…

THE HISTORY
Originally written as a short play, Quint-Essential performed THE EVACUEE in three London fringe theatres in 2011, as part of a collection of short plays entitled Dark Tales. Due to the overwhelming response from both audience and critics alike playwright Ian Breeds set about creating the full length version of this heartbreaking yet dark original piece of theatre.

2011 PRESS QUOTES

“…  it created an undercurrent of tension and increasing curiosity, and the final resolution was worthy of the cult 1980’s TV series, Tales of the Unexpected.”
-Katherine Ives for the Islington Gazette-

“There is a serious undercurrent here of what war and stress can do to people with an ingenious plot… Full marks for the poltergeist–like effects.”
-British Theatre Guide Review by Howard Loxton-

“The whole audience were literally terrified! Techniques such as making the rocking chair rock on its own, were baffling as well as creepy, keeping the audience hooked, as well as question how the hell they pulled it off?!”
-Christine Stanton for Remote Goat-
