DIABOLIQUE MAGAZINE gets Exclusive Interview from The Soska Twins...

DIABOLIQUE MAGAZINE gets Exclusive Interview from The Soska Twins, complete with previously unseen behind the scenes photos from their new body horror film AMERICAN MARY!

NEWS BREAK! - Diabolique Magazine announces their exclusive and in-depth interview with the Soska Twins in Issue 14 available at newsstands and bookstores in early January, 2013. Jen and Sylvia Soska give Canadian body-horror a nip and tuck. The thematic undercurrents of American Mary, and even Dead Hooker in a Trunk — namely, the messiness of sexuality, and the plight of being a woman in a man’s world — are as tightly bound together as the self-proclaimed “Twisted Twins” themselves. Jen and Sylvia Soska spoke with Diabolique at length about the intersection of their personal and professional lives, and its creative impact on their ever-evolving body of work! Log on to: http://horrorunlimited.com/Issue-No.-14-Jan-Feb-2013.html for more details and to pre-order your copy of Diabolique magazine Issue 14 now!

Nominally, American Mary is cut from the cloth of the Canadian body-horror of David Cronenberg, but its torture sequences and characterization owe more to the feminist fervor of Takashi Miike’s Audition than the dystopia of Videodrome. As a hyper-violent inversion of Colin Clive’s mad scientist archetype in Frankenstein, Mary calls on her surgical kit not only as a tool for experimentation, but as a weapon to exact bittersweet revenge.

In a moment of reflexivity, writer-directors Jen and Sylvia Soska lay on operating tables adjacent to one another, exchanging smiles and locking pinkies before going under the surgical knife in their sophomore feature, the blacker than black horror-comedy American Mary. Preparing to undergo a procedure that will re-attach one of each of their limbs to the other’s body, the on-screen Soskas, billed as “Twin #1” and “Twin #2,” offer viewers a mirror image of their unified, off-screen collaborative dynamic. Fresh off of their tour of the international film festival circuit, the Soskas assure Diabolique“We take absolutely no offense to you attributing one of our quotes to the other.” Before we begin our interview, Sylvia adds, “We share one brain, but two bodies.”

The Download Horror

When it comes to movies Dougie and Robbo know what they like. And there is nothing they like more than a night in watching one of Big Al’s latest downloads - especially if it’s a horror film featuring five babes alone in a big house.

Big Al is the neighbourhood bootlegger and they depend on him for a constant diet of blood, gore and nudity and whatever else he thinks will satisfy their craving. They always expect surprises.

Will his latest offering, the horror film Sacrificed, live up to their expectations?

Stars: Sandra Darnell, Trine Thielen, Céline Cateland, Nina Kwok, Sarah Delaney and Stephen Boyd
Directed by: Jim Hickey
Produced: Keith Bradley & Robin Mitchell

From Director Jim Hickey:

The film SACRIFICED was made a few years ago by Keith Bradley and it was a film that fell short of Keith's ambitions and we knew that realistically it had little prospect of a release. It was, however, a film that delivered on a number of levels and we therefore decided to experiment with the addition of the dialogue from these new off-screen characters viewing the film as a present-day download. One of these voices is Keith himself and he was thrilled at the prospect of handing over to director Jim Hickey to complete the task of helping his film find an audience.

In making THE DOWNLOAD HORROR we have tried to be fair to the original SACRIFICED film, so the audience can enjoy whatever pleasures it offers and hopefully a balance has been struck between this and giving the two guys free reign with their own brand of Scottish humour. The new film’s ultimate success with audiences will therefore depend on how successful their comedy is in enhancing the enjoyment of the original film.

The film has been supplied to them by “Big Al” - on whom they depend for a regular quota of gore and nudity - and as THE DOWNLOAD HORROR unfolds, we share their joy or dissatisfaction as they assess how much Big Al lives up to his reputation.

So the two friends are unable to contain their excitement about what they are seeing, but are also quick to deliver snap judgements - praise as well as put-downs - about individual scenes and moments as they watch. They communicate their love of the horror genre while their own distinctive humour is unrestrained.

Decay

Trapped underground at the world's largest particle accelerator, a group of students make a deadly discovery.

DECAY is a zombie film made and set at the LHC, by physics PhD students. The cast includes Zoë Hatherell, Tom Procter, Stewart Martin-Haugh, Sara Mahmoud, and William P.Martin.

Written and Directed by Luke Thompson
Produced by Michael Mazur, Luke Thompson, and Burton De Wilde
H2ZZ Productions

More about the film:

Made by physicists, it is set at the Large Hadron Collider, and centres around zombies created by exposure to the newly-discovered Higgs boson. Writer and director Luke Thompson, a University of Manchester Ph.D. student, originally conceived the idea in February 2010, after joking that the tunnels under CERN would be ideal for a zombie film. With a budget of approximately £2000 and a regular cast and crew of only 20, the team built a camera shoulder-mount from copper pipes, made fake blood from golden syrup, and scavenged props from dumpsters. It was shot on borrowed digital SLRs including the Canon 5D Mark 2: consumer cameras which have recently been used to shoot parts of movies such as Iron Man 2, Black Swan and the season 6 finale of TV series House. Editing and digital effects were done on a home computer with Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects.

Now it’s time to enjoy Decay…
