The Dead Walked Trilogy

Some said it was viral.
Others claimed it was an act of God.
Either way the result was the same and the dead walked.

September was her favourite time of the year, and late September, when the autumn was just preparing to hand over to winter, when there was still a residue of the late summer warmth in the air, as well as the crisp promise of the iciness to come, had always been, as far as Missy was concerned, the finest chunk of that particular month.

Not for her was the spectacle of high summer, nor the morose beauty of mid winter. Of course they both had their fineries but these paled next to the season when the leaves glittered with reflected sunlight. It was the autumn, with September being the highlight of that season, which she loved – a time when nature put on its finest display as the lush summer growth was magically transformed.

The sky itself seemed to glow at this time of year.
September was a time of promise.
A time of rebirth.
Not this September, though.
This September, Missy would remember as, the time the dead walked.

Check out this review:

"Vincent Stark, otherwise known as Gary Dobbs, presents a new look at the zombie story. A group of people trying to survive in a world gone nuts. Sound familiar. Of course.

But Stark has injected his own elements into the story. A pregnant woman and a plot thread I've not seen in a zombie story before. The ending threw a twist in and sets up the next part of the story, coming soon.

Zombie stories are not a type I read a lot of, but I've come to expect good stuff from Stark/Dobbs/Martin, whatever genre he writes in.

I read this one straight through while drinking coffee early this morning.

Recommended."

Banned in Edmonton, “The Killing Games” gets world premiere at the Calgary International Film Fest.

The Calgary International Film Festival has said that THE KILLING GAMES will make it's World Premiere on Saturday September 22nd as a part of the Late Show Series. “We are just ecstatic that Calgary has accepted the movie to Premiere at their festival,” States director Barry J. Gillis.

Bruce Fletcher who is a programmer with The Calgary International Film Festival told Gillis that he watched the movie twice, and found the movie to be very entertaining. Gillis continues, “We're so happy that Bruce, Brenda Lieberman and The Calgary International Film Festival were brave enough to take a chance on THE KILLING GAMES, especially after the movie was turned down in Edmonton.”

In May, Gillis was told that his feature film THE KILLING GAMES was “too violent for The Edmonton International Film Festival.” Gillis was shocked by the decision, mainly because he resides in Edmonton.

“Yes, I was shocked,” laments Gillis, “but that's all in the past now. We're heading South down to the great city of Calgary where Oscar-nominated Canadian director Deepa Mehta's film MIDNIGHT'S CHILDREN,” is going to open the Calgary International Film Festival. Brandon Cronenberg's movie ANTIVIRAL will also be playing in the Late Show Series, and we couldn't dream of being apart of anything bigger and better than that.”

The Calgary International Film Festival is world renowned for their hospitality and the way that they treat filmmakers and film fans alike. “Calgary gets upwards of 50,000 fans attending their festival. Tourists, fans, great films, and the best parties... I mean, this is huge for us Gillis says with a grin.

Calgary and Edmonton have been rival cities for many years. “Yes, the two cities have been at it for what seems like forever” says Gillis with a laugh, “however, Calgary is not just going to accept a movie because Edmonton turned it down. I mean, THE KILLING GAMES is entertaining as hell, just ask Jason Eisener who directed HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN starring Rutger Hauer.

THE KILLING GAMES is a disturbing feature film about a man who's wife is dying of a mysterious illness. The man contemplates taking the law into his own hands, after his daughter witnesses a double homicide and narrowly escapes the grasp of two serial killers.

DR. WINTERS (Ace Hanna of Calgary, Alberta) CHECKS UP ON DIANA (Chryl Lisk) in THE KILLING GAMES

THE KILLING GAMES was shot in Wabuman, Lac St. Anne, Alberta Beach and Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. It stars Donald A. Morin, leading actor of the acclaimed French Canadian feature film Windigo. It also stars Denmark's Kim Sonderholm, who has been involved in over 100 movies, including his latest outing entitled “LITTLE BIG BOY.” Calgary actor Ace Hanna also stars in the movie as the troubled Dr. Winters.

The Calgary International Film Festival is in it's 13th great year. This years festival runs from August 20th to August 30th and is guaranteed to be the best film festival that the city of Calgary, and province of Alberta has ever witnessed.

The Final Haunting

The plot consists of two parallel storylines which cleverly intermingle, revealing tantalising elements of the characters back stories.  The drama builds, driving the levels of suspense to a fever pitch with lots of fast cutaways and a discordant nursery rhyme theme used to accentuate the tension, thrill and suspense. The story centres on twenty two year old Lily Reynolds who hides a terrible secret that threatens to escape when she reluctantly accepts a baby sitting job for unhappily married Tom and Samantha Thompson at their home, Grosvenor Grange. Echoes of Lily’s past seep out as she steps into the haunted house and becomes possessed by horrifying personalities. We watch her struggle to protect the baby in her charge from an ever increasing danger, but is it real or imaginary?

The Final Haunting is a seriously intelligent low budget thriller/horror set in the North of England with identifiable well rounded characters, and a story that takes the viewer into a world where nothing is as it seems.  This is an edge of your seat scare-fest, where a tragic ghost story is cleverly intermingled with a tense psychological subplot.

The Final Haunting probes terrifying and realistic 20th century issues and illustrates how levels of psychological illness primarily brought about by abusive male figures can lead to tragic consequences.  Set against a backdrop of Grosvenor Grange, a dilapidated Victorian villa, we encounter:

Three hideous suspects. Two dead babies and one sad portrait.

TRAILER FOR CAESAR & OTTO'S DEADLY X-MAS FOLLOWS SELECTION FOR ELVIRA'S HORROR HUNT, HORRIFIC FILM FEST

August 21, 2012 (Los Angeles, CA) - The long awaited trailer for Caesar and Otto's Deadly XMas, the latest film by Dave Campfield, who Josh Pasnak of Video Graveyard hails as "one of the more impressive talents to come out of the indie scene in a while," has been released following the announcement of it's selection as one of the seven feature films selected for Elvira's Horror Hunt. The film will screen the weekend of September 7-9 in Indianapolis, Indiana, at HorrorHound Weekend, one of the countries biggest horror, sci-fi, and fantasy film conventions, with the Mistress of the Dark herself on hand to award the contest winners, whose fate will be decided by a panel of horror industry professionals.

Poking fun at the 1980s wave of Christmas slasher films, Caesar and Otto's Deadly XMas, directed by Dave Campfield and produced by Campfield, Rich Calderon, Joe Randazzo, and Robin Ritter, is a horror parody the likes of which hasn't been seen since the days of Abbott & Costello. Ain't It Cool News says that "Like Abbott & Costello before them, Caesar and Otto bring genuine humor to the horror genre." Titular brothers Caesar and Otto (Dave Campfield and Paul Chomicki) find themselves employed at Xmas Enterprises Inc. where, a disgruntled employee in a Santa suit (former CKY frontman Deron Miller) has begun a killing spree. Now it looks like he's found himself the perfect patsies.

Caesar and Otto's Deadly XMas features a ensemble cast of some of the all time great B movie stars including former CKY and current World Under Blood frontman Deron Miller, "Sleepaway Camp" star Felissa Rose, Brinke Stevens, Joe Estevez, Troma CEO Lloyd Kaufman, Debbie Rochon, and Linnea Quigley in a role that lampoons her death scene in "Silent Night, Deadly Night." These legends join a cast of up and coming talent such as Paul Chomicki, Ken MacFarlane, Samantha Barrios, and Summer Ferguson, and youtube sensations Lauren Francesca, and Shawn "Coolduder" Phillips, most recently seen in The Asylum's "The Haunting of Whaley House."

The film will also be screening at the Alamo Drafthouse in San Antonio, Texas on Sunday, September 2 at 12:45pm as part of the Horrific Film Festival, where it has received 4 nominations including Best Feature Film, Best Director, Best Actor (Campfield), and Best Actress (Summer Ferguson).

Magnet takes worldwide rights to Don Coscarelli's John Dies at the End

New York, NY – August 20th, 2012 – The Wagner/Cuban Company’s Magnet Releasing, genre arm of Magnolia Pictures, announced today they have acquired worldwide rights to JOHN DIES AT THE END, a phantasmagoric new sci-fi/horror film directed, produced and written for the screen by auteur and cult legend Don Coscarelli (Bubba Ho-Tep, the Phantasm series). Starring Paul Giamatti (who executive produced with Daniel Carey), Chase Williamson, Rob Mayes, Clancy Brown, Glynn Turman and Doug Jones, the film was also produced by M3 Creative’s Brad Baruh, Andy Meyers and Roman Perez, and based on the bestselling book by David Wong.

Paul Giamatti plays Arnie, a shadowy figure investigating a street drug known as Soy Sauce. Promising an out-of-body experience with each hit, Soy Sauce causes users to drift across time and dimensions. But some who come back are no longer human. Suddenly a silent otherworldly invasion is underway, and mankind needs a hero. What it gets instead is John and Dave (Mayes and Williamson), a pair of college dropouts who can barely hold down jobs. Can these two stop the oncoming horror in time to save humanity?  No. No, they can’t.

JOHN DIES AT THE END premiered as a work in progress at this year’s Sundance film festival, kicking off an impressive festival run that included SXSW and the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival, where the final cut of the film will premiere as the closing night film of Midnight Madness. Magnet will release the film this year through its Ultra VOD program, debuting it on all VOD platforms in late December, with a theatrical release to follow in early 2013.

“We are longtime fans of the great Don Coscarelli, and fell in love with this film when it debuted at Sundance,” said Magnolia/Magnet President Eamonn Bowles. “It’s a real head trip—imaginative, wildly funny, and incredibly demented, with all the makings of an underground classic that fans will come back to again and again.”

Coscarelli adds, “It is my great pleasure to be allied with the finest and most entrepreneurial independent film distributor in the terrific team at Magnolia Pictures. They share my passion for the story of Dave and John…Obviously the “Soy Sauce” that kicks the plot into gear has had the same addictive effect on them as it did me. Watch out!”
The deal was negotiated by Magnet/Magnolia Director of Acquisitions Peter Van Steemburg with the filmmakers.

The "Devil Bat Diary" Takes Flight!

“DEVIL BAT DIARY - The Journal of Johnny Layton” by Peter H. Brothers

Inspired by the famous 1940 film, “Devil Bat Diary” (CreateSpace, ISBN: 9-781461-070924), tells the “true” story of what really happened to the unhappy citizens of Heathville, Illinois, during that terrible prewar summer, as recorded in the long-suppressed journals of Chicago City Register’s principal newspaper correspondent, Jonathan “Johnny” Layton.

The Devil Bats were furiously furry fiends created by a scientific genius who believes himself wrongfully relegated to concocting perfumes and colognes which he despises for wages not worth mentioning.  So, as a means to an embittered end, he manufactures an evil ointment with a scent that so infuriates his giant bats to such an extent they feel compelled to tear the throats out of their unsuspecting victims.

“Devil Bat Diary” tells for the first time the full inside story of what took place in ways not possible to show to Production Code audiences back then; did you know for example that Chief Wilkins loved Layton, or that Mary was a religious lunatic, or that Layton and his partner “One-Shot” McGuire couldn’t stand the sight of each other?

Written to coincide with the 70th Anniversary of the film’s release and dedicated to the great Bela Lugosi, “Devil Bat Diary” is an unforgettably entertaining venture into a world filled with chirping Chiropterans, malicious murders, sacred sex and revolting revelations. [Contains adult subject matter]

(Three-time Rondo Award nominee Peter H. Brothers is also the author of “Mushroom Clouds and Mushroom Men – The Fantastic Cinema of Ishiro Honda” and the “Devil Bat Diary” sequel: “Terror In Tinseltown – The Sequel to Devil Bat Diary.”)
