It’s time to sharpen those shanks and request that last meal because Melbourne’s very own poets of putrescence are back! That’s right, Lady Sophronia Lick-Penny, Mr. Farcquar and Alphonse Cheese-Probert of The Laudanum Project are bringing their third and latest theatrical monstrosity, Ballad Of The Plague Doctor to life within the darkened corridors of Old Geelong Gaol. Over two nights psychodrama and explicitly grotesque wordplay will merge within the grim and dank prison walls as complex poetry and hellish soundscapes recreate the final days of Dr. Marrok Corvus Rapere, Medieval London's first Community Plague Doctor.
Set in London in 1348 during the onslaught of the Black Death, this one act play is a visceral yet solemn meditation on disease, mental collapse and bloody stupid poor people. As narrator Alphonse Cheese-Probert recounts the epic and harrowing events of Rapere's life, the coiling soundscape created by Lady Sophronia Lick-Penny forms an ever shifting musical mosaic that envelopes the entire story and conjures countless unhinged images. Make no mistake. This is not for the faint of heart.
With Ballad Of The Plague Doctor The Laudanum Project have loaded up their meat cart with the usual array of pitch black humour, over the top melodrama and hideously detailed word play, and dragged the whole steaming mess out into the tall weeds. Be warned.
