The Drinking Dead Game

The Drinking Dead card game is fun, fast-paced and compact enough to bring with you anywhere. There are two variations of the rules that are both simple and easy to remember so newcomers won't lose interest learning to play for the first time at a party. The game features all original characters including zombies, humans and special or weapon cards.

In the early years of the 21st century home brewing kits and microbreweries were popular among college students and young adults. College fraternities and sororities would hold large parties with contests for the best homemade beers. Unfortunately, a large amount of hops had become contaminated with a mixture of ashes, formaldehyde and other chemicals from a crematorium close to where the hops were grown. The results were catastrophic. Numerous batches of make-your-own beer kits and several microbreweries produced contaminated beers which would cause death within a short time from consumption. More disturbingly, the deaths were not the worst consequence. The contaminated beers produced mutated yeast which affected the brain and kept basic primitive functions active resulting in those individuals returning from the dead with a hunger for fresh meat and desire for alcohol to feed the mutated yeast. These byproducts of the mutated yeast (the “Drinking Dead”) were extremely contagious although it is unknown exactly how or what spreads the disease. It is known that a bite from one of these Drinking Dead will result in death and regeneration just as quickly as drinking the contaminated brew. The disease spread through campuses and college towns at an unstoppable rate. Patrons at bars thought it was a fraternity prank or people coming from a costume party. By the time they realized that they were in danger, they had been attacked and turned. Police responded to what they thought were bar fights and fell victims themselves, leaving the public with no local authorities to help. Many military installations were quickly infiltrated believing their personnel returning from town were playing a prank as a result of all the recent popular zombie movies and television shows. By the time the federal government was made aware of the situation, there weren’t many military or local authorities remaining to control the epidemic. The CDC issued an advisory to only drink beers from large manufacturers and to avoid anyone who is non-responsive or moves in an uncoordinated fashion. Martial law was declared as society quickly fell apart. We hear there are government facilities underground working on a cure, but these may just be rumors. If you were fortunate enough to have survived this long, we wish you luck. Hopefully, the following advice will help you stay alive until a cure is found:

(1) only consume beer from well known major breweries

(2) don’t trust anyone who looks like they are auditioning for a Grade B horror film

(3) get a weapon and aim for the head.

These are the basic rules on how to play. Included in the game is another version of how to play, plus suggested variations of the rules.

The Cards

The HUMAN cards and ZOMBIE cards have a number in the upper right corner designating their strength. Some ZOMBIE cards and HUMAN cards have a higher strength than others. For example, the "survivalist" HUMAN card has a higher strength because he is going to be more prepared in the event of an actual attack than your average person. The “football player” ZOMBIE card has a higher strength because he was an athlete turned zombie and likely bigger, stronger and possibly faster than the average person turned zombie. Our game, our logic! The SPECIAL cards have specific instructions on them as to when and how they may be played. Some SPECIAL cards may be played anytime while others need to be played with a specific character card.

The Rules

Six cards are dealt out to each player (two down and four face up). All players pick one card from their hand to play that round and place it on the table face down. At the same time, everyone flips their card over for the "attack." If the combined strength of the HUMAN cards played are higher than the combined strength of the ZOMBIE cards, then the players who played the ZOMBIE cards take a drink and draw another card. The same thing would happen to the players of HUMAN cards if the ZOMBIES overpowered the HUMANS. If all cards played are ZOMBIES, then everyone takes a drink because it's a herd of Drinking Dead. If all cards played are HUMAN cards, than everyone gets to choose a player to take a drink. One player, however, cannot be made to take drinks from more than half of the entire group. That is our no bullying rule! Play continues until at least one person goes out by playing all of their cards. The winner(s) gets to give out two drinks. The person who has the most cards has to take two penalty drinks. Any players holding a special card will have to take a penalty drink for every SPECIAL card they hold.
