The
Dungeon Documentary: The Comic Art to Making an Indie Epic is an in-depth look
into the life of an indie artist. It features comic book artist Shawn Harbin,
an underdog who has been working on his comic book series The Dungeon Comic for
the past 6 years. While not uncommon in the world of indie comics, most people
don’t realize what goes into it. The long hours, the conventions, the lawsuits,
business deals gone bad, ideas stolen, harsh criticisms, rejection, printing,
and distributing all while trying to make ends meet. What makes this comic
unique is not only is its grand scale of more than 500 pages, Harbin did all
the work on his own. Each issue being double in size, he tackled the writing,
penciling, inking, coloring, and lettering in hope of being discovered. In the
process he has developed a strange new world along with a passion for his
characters, while juggling life in the process. Through much tragedy and loss,
he’s had every reason to give up, yet continues working on the book. The
Dungeon Documentary exposes the hardships and successes of working indie while
trying to make a mainstream living. Part instructional, part human interest,
anyone wanting to work in comics should see this film.
The
film is currently being funded on Kickstarter. The best aspect of the campaign
are the rewards of collector cups, art from the film, sketch covers, movie
posters, copies of the comic, Blu-Ray DVDs, and some of these rewards are found
at very inexpensive tiers. If you donate to the campaign, and it fails they are
even giving the supporters a free 30-minute instructional video. It’s
definitely worth checking out.
