Post-apocalyptic,
teenage pirates with Lovecraftian monsters.
Tommy
Fenn is one of the oldest people left alive on Orcas Island. He’s fifteen. The
Orphan Fog plague has wiped out all the adults and young children and now the
Pacific Northwest is a wasteland of teens and tweens struggling to survive
amongst the rotting bodies of their parents and the wreckage of their world.
Scavenging
can only take them so far. Tommy doesn’t know when the National Guard will come
back, or even if the government still exists. So he and his gang learn to sail,
to trade with other survivors around the islands, to see what’s out there. And
what’s out there is pirates; murdering, raping teenagers who take what they
want and shoot anyone who gets in their way. To protect the island, Tommy
proposes joining forces with the Rosario colony. Their leader, Brad Dexter,
refuses. He considers Tommy a criminal, as bad as any pirate. Then the pirates
invade Tommy’s cove and kidnap Jennifer Nakasura.
And
far away, at the top of the Space Needle, the Emperor, a mysterious young man
with a special destiny, gathers his army under the red octopus flag. He is
searching for a strange mutant child. A child with tentacles.
Though
this is a novel about teenagers, it is not a young adult novel. There’s a lot
of profanity, drugs and drinking and plenty of sex and violence, too.
This
book is getting some great reviews! Here are just a few of them:
“Teenage
post apocalyptic pirates and Lovecraftian monsters!!! This book did not
disappoint. Young and Evil is one of the best books I've read in years and its
a nice peak at a fantastic new post apocalyptic fantasy world, one i hope I can
return to soon.
Great
characters, tons of violence, and great humor, this book really isnt for
younger readers. It can be pretty graphic with the sex scenes and the gore, but
I love that. Please, anyone who hasn't read this, please do and help Mr. Orser
get his name known!!!! This book was awesome and now I just want a sequel!”
“Young
and Evil is the appropriately titled tale of a post apocalyptic scenario in
which a mysterious disease wipes out the population over 16 years of age
leaving children to fill the roles of adults. Be warned: this ain't Bugsy
Malone and it certainly isn't a young adult novel. It's a bit disturbing and
shamelessly vulgar but a hell of a lot of fun. As in A Clockwork Orange you'll
find children behaving very badly and the author continually reminds you of
this fact. Deal. It's a fantasy. A thoroughly enjoyable fantasy with many
surprises and a nice twist that will put you in mind of a certain reclusive New
England writer.”
“'Young
and Evil' is not for the squeamish person. There is a lot of graphic
violence in it, reminding me of All Quiet on the Western Front Publisher: Ballantine Books, another great book.
This story, as the author admits, is not written for teenagers, although it is
the kind of book many teenage boys would no doubt enjoy.”
