Throughout
the last century of film and television many movies have depicted certain
moments of brutality and blood. When I initially came upon ‘The Orphan Killer’ I
instantly knew I was certainly in for a surprise for a ‘Trick or
Treat’.
The
Orphan Killer, is a chilling, psychological tale and a blood feast of
a compelling journey. The story initially follows the lives of two
innocent children, Marcus and Audrey Miller, after the brutal witness
of the murder of their parents at their New Jersey home. The children are
sent to the Catholic Orphanage. Audrey becomes subjective to frequent
adoptive families, but Audrey’s Brother Marcus is mentally
changed forever from the recent disturbing events. He
becomes the subject of frequent abuse from the caretakers, and exiled
and mistreated, and furthermore a punishment of being masked. Marcus
has never forgiven his baby Sister for abandoning him. Many
years have passed from the torment inflicted upon him and still hiding
deviously behind the mask, Marcus, played by David Backhaus, returns
to seek and mentally destroy his baby Sister and
to also teach her some brutal lessons of cruelty, played
by scream queen beauty Diane Foster.
When
I sat down with my popcorn I immediately became distracted into the
movie. I locked the doors and closed my windows and dimmed the lights, and
the countdown began. I instantly was drawn into the hell given nightmarish
world of ‘The Slasher Icon’ known as TOK, by the forever growing fan
base. Personally, I believe the movie will grow into a franchise, featuring a
superb cast including, Matt Farnsworth as a supporting Actor within the
film. The Character of Marcus Miller, will be defined as a true original Horror
Icon for a whole new generation of Horror fans. This is certainly a refreshing
comeback to the slasher genre with a brutal, bloody and enjoyable
script. The movie was released in late 2011 and also featured a brutal
music score of metal genre compositions which certainly coincide with the
story of the film. On the initial release of ‘TOK’ it received mixed
reviews with Germany banning the film, which could be due to the religious
elements within the story. The Orphan Killer received several awards,
including an award at the Festival de Cine de Terror de Molins de Rei for
"Best Picture".
Presently
‘The Orphan Killer’ is available for pre order as a special edition steel book
blu ray due out the month of November,2013. This release is a pretty impressive
collector’s item for the avid horror fan or the newcomer to the genre. The set
also includes extra features, such as ‘behind the murder’ a full 1 hour
and 30 minutes behind the scenes footage, and the TOK soundtrack and much more.
Another treat for horror fans and a wonderful item for the season for a
‘bloody Halloween is the release of the infamous ‘Slasher Icon mask, as worn by
Marcus Miller. Due to the continued success of the first TOK installment, pre-production has begun for a sequel.
My
overall rating is most certainly 10 out of 10.
