Popularity Killer

Slasher Studios is proud to bring you their second slasher hit. “Popularity Killer” is a low budget dark-comedy horror short from the studio that brought you “Teddy: It’s Gonna Be a Bear”. “Teddy”, Slasher Studios’ first short horror film, was an independent 14 page horror short that was shot on Canon 5D with a budget of just $3,000 over three days in a mountain cabin. “Popularity Killer” was far more ambitious in nature. Seven deaths, a budget of just $5,000, and seven days of filming went into the bloody slasher flick.

With “Popularity Killer”, Slasher Studios has created a smart and bitterly funny horror film about the clichés of high school. With the dark social satire of the script (kill or be killed elements of high school), they have devised a horror film that plays homage to both the slasher films of the 1980′s as well as the slasher films of the 1990′s. Max Ingram from Rabid Dog Press said “I’d definitely recommend checking out Popularity Killer. It’s a genuinely fun time, and when I watched it I felt like I was transported back to the movie theatres of 1985 when slasher movies were king. This is good, gore-tastic stuff!”

Plot Synopsis:
“After a young girl is found murdered, a group of teens at Payton High must band together to piece together the horrifying travesty. The teens soon discover the mysterious killer is killing only the most popular students in school. As their friends die one-by-one in the most shockingly gruesome ways possible, they realize that being “in” may not get them out…alive. Every school has an it list…pray you’re not on this one.”

“Popularity Killer” stars Courtney Ellen Bay, Matty Dorschner, Mike Goltz, Jennifer Frey, Hannah Herdt, Dana Michele, Jamie Jo Roen, and Kevin Sommerfield. Directed by Steve Goltz and Written by Kevin Sommerfield.
“Popularity Killer” can be ordered at the link below:

Dr. Gangrene Scares Up Three Emmy Nominations (PR)

Dr. Gangrene Scares Up Three Emmy Nominations

NASHVILLE, TN (11.20.2011) The Nashville/Midsouth Chapter of The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences  announced their Midsouth Regional EMMY Award nominations on Friday, November 18, at a party hosted by Broadcast Music Incorporated (BMI) on Nashville’s legendary Music Row. Among the nominations were three for the creative minds behind television horror host, Dr. Gangrene.

Larry Underwood & Cameron McCasland picked up an EMMY nomination in the Entertainment category for the made for television movie “The Dreadful Hallowgreen Special” as well as two more nominations for Best PSA Campaign, and Best Short Form Writer for the “Go Green With Dr. Gangrene” series.

The good doctor said of the nomination, “This is a huge honor and it's great to see all our hard work appreciated. A big thanks to all the cast and crew who helped make these projects possible. We had a lot of fun with them and look forward to more horrific projects and collaborations in the future."

The Dreadful Hallowgreen Special pairs TV horror hosts Penny Dreadful & Dr. Gangrene together. The duo finds themselves readying for the upcoming Halloween season when suddenly all things go awry. It’s up to the physician of fright, Dr. Gangrene, and the eerie enchantress, Penny Dreadful, to set things right and save Halloween for everyone in this half hour special. Narrated by Washington DC’s legendary horror host Count Gore De Vol, this Halloween treat is packed with fright.

The “Go Green With Dr. Gangrene” series is a continuing collaboration between Underwood and McCasland and provides ways to make a safer, cleaner planet while using a horror theme as their backdrop. The 2011 installment featured Frankensteins monster, The Werewolf of Nashville, and The Creature from the Nashville Lagoon. The three newest shorts entitled, “Wolfbite”, “Creature Cooler”, and “Heating Up” provide tips on conserving the planet by cutting down on excessive waste, littering, and keeping tabs on pets. All three were filmed in and around Nashville landmarks, and are shot in glorious black & white as a loving nod to the classic monster films of yesteryear. McCasland was previously nominated for an EMMY in the Best Short Form Writer category for his work on “Go Green With Dr. Gangrene” in both 2008 and 2009.

McCasland said of the nomination, “We’re just so happy that people like our show. Dreadful Hallowgreen was such a blast to make, and I'm not sure if we could ever pull something like that off again. Go Green has been a great joy for me to work on, and this past year even more so, as I got to bring in a lot of people who I had worked with in the past to play small parts. We’re just out there with rubber monster masks, and people seem to love it.”

The Dreadful Hallowgreen Special is distributed in the U.S. on home video and DVD by Alpha New Cinema. It premiered locally in Nashville on WNAB CW58 during Halloween weekend 2010, and was syndicated around the country. The made for television movie is a co-production of Shackle Island Studios and Peculiar Productions.

The 26th Annual Midsouth Emmy Awards will be announced during a live telecast in Nashville on March 17, 2012 at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center. For a full list of this year’s nominees please visit http://nashville.emmyonline.org/

Jennifer Lane of Decosimo Vaden. CPAs, who tabulated the ballots, announced that the 700 entries for the Midsouth Emmy Awards were judged by the Chicago/Midwest Chapter, the Mid-America Chapter based in St. Louis, the Mid-Atlantic Chapter based in Philadelphia, and the New York Chapter. She said Sixty-five television stations, production companies, and independent producers are named on the list of nominations.

Larry Underwood is an award winning writer and television producer. Outside of his role of Dr. Gangrene , he writes a regular column for Scary Monsters Magazine and daily musings in his Tales From The Lab Blog at http://drgangrene.com/. Recently he was featured on the cover of Nashville Scene Magazine and in four color ink solving crimes alongside Dick Tracy in the classic comic strip.

Cameron McCasland is an Emmy nominated film maker from Edgewood Texas who has called Nashville home since 2001. His work has been seen on MTV, CMT, and film festivals around the globe. His upcoming feature film “The Lashman” is currently in post production.

Founded in 1957 The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences is a non-profit, professional organization dedicated to fostering excellence in television. The academy has 19 chapters with 15,000 members nationwide.

All American Zombie Drugs And Twisted Central Team Up For Operation Kindness (PR)

All American Zombie Drugs is heading to Dallas for a two-day showing at the Angelika Theater; a Twisted Central hosted event in support of the local animal shelter Operation Kindness.

All American Zombie Drugs is a hilarious comedic social satire put together by filmmakers Beau Nelson and Alex Ballar. Sebastian (Beau Nelson - The Artist, Madoff: Made Off With America) and Vinny (Wolfgang Weber) are burn-outs going nowhere in small town Suburbia, USA. Still riding the high left over from their high school days, they start a business manufacturing the only thing they have ever been good at, drugs.

With the help of Sebastian’s jealous girlfriend Kara (Susan Graham) and her rich Goth friend Melissa (Natalie Irby), our two slackers take on the local Mob, angry geek-frat-boys, Vinny’s dead brother Michael (Alex Ballar – War Wolves, Sasquatch Mountain) and Zombies.

For two days only, December 9th and 10th at 8pm, Twisted Central will be sponsoring the event at The Angelika Theater in Dallas, TX in support of North Texas’ Oldest and Largest No-Kill Animal Shelter, Operation Kindness. All proceeds go directly to support animal humanity. Operation Kindness will be in attendance with animals from the shelter prior to the showing, then join the Director, Alex Ballar, and actors Beau Nelson and Wolfgang Weber for a Q&A following the showing each night.

The film, nominated for Best Comedy, Best Cinematography and Winner of Best Art Direction at the AOF Int’l Festival has been compared to Dude Where’s My Car meets Pineapple Express with Zombies; special appearances by Brian Thomas Smith (Big Bang Theory) and David Reynolds (The Hills Have Eyes, House of 1000 Corpses).

Twisted Central (TwistedCentral.com) is run by Dallas-area local native, Tammy Dupal. Together we hope to raise awareness and help save the homeless animals in the world.

Coming Soon: Scary Tales & Sickle (PR)

X Posse Productions Completes SCARY TALES & SICKLE: Two New Doses of Horror

Massachusetts, November 15, 2011 – In 2009, the horror mystery “FAMILY SECRET” was filmed.  It was the third film in the career of Writer/Director, Geno McGahee, and by far, the best.  In New England, FAMILY SECRET became a hit, initially selling out a cinema in Connecticut and filling several local establishments with eager horror fans.  It sold well on DVD and people began to ask: What will be next?  The answer came quickly.

In 2010, production began on SCARY TALES, an anthology, featuring four tales, each with shocks and surprises.  In the vein of CREEPSHOW and TALES FROM THE CRYPT, SCARY TALES features distinct tales with great performances by the many talented actors and actresses involved.  New additions to the X Posse Crew included a new musician (Greg Kozlowski) doing the score and a CGI expert (Chris Dias) adding a new element to the production and bringing some of the monstrosities to life in a way that will please the audience.  SCARY TALES also features the music of Shadowside and The Putrid Flowers.  With axe murderers, zombies, cannibals, demons, werewolves, and the devil himself, SCARY TALES brings a little bit of everything, with an estimated release date of mid 2012.

With no rest for the wicked, McGahee quickly began filming SICKLE, the most ambitious project to date.  A young boy is accused of killing his babysitter, but insists that he saw a monster do it. Locked up for 15 years, he is now free, but the monster has returned to his life.  With ghost hunters trying to prove it exists, others trying to control it, and others trying to kill it, SICKLE will be a monster movie to remember, featuring special effects never seen before in an X Posse Production along with the surprises that you have come to love with FAMILY SECRET.  SICKLE wrapped production in mid October and the release estimate is in early 2013.   Sonora, the band that did the title track for FAMILY SECRET, returns with their take on the monster that dwells in SICKLE.

About X POSSE PRODUCTIONS

X Posse Productions, based out of Massachusetts, was founded by Writer/Director Geno McGahee and began in 2001 with the first film “EVIL AWAKENING,” followed by “RISE OF THE SCARECROWS,” in 2004, both released by Tempe Entertainment in 2008/2009.  McGahee took a hiatus from filming, learning the craft, and returned with FAMILY SECRET, released in 2011, and now works full time in film, writing, directing, and producing.  X Posse Productions plans to produce quality films, bringing together the local talent from New England and then expanding as the popularity grows.
